Robotic NXT®

Robot to program!

What would you say to programming a little Wall-E? This is what we offer with the MINDSTORMS NXT® robot. In this turnkey project, your computer scientists will learn how to program the NXT® robot from a computer. Equipped with three electric motors and five sensors, the robot will perform different activities during each of our visits, such as hip-hop dancing, sumo wrestling, moving through a maze and choreographic workshop…You will certainly be impressed by the talents of your young scientists!

On the menu:

  • Three 90 minutes in-school workshops
  • 60 minutes workshops possibly as an extracurricular activity

Objectives at the elementary level:

  • Understand the mechanism of the parts of a robot (brick, motors, sensors and structure).
  • Understand a programming sequence using the Mindstorms EV3®
  • Recognize the rotation and translation movements in the actions of robots.
  • Identify mechanical parts and their effects (gears, cams and levers).
  • Explain the use of fractions in robotics (gear ratio and rotation of wheels)
  • Recognize and identify the execution challenges (frictional force, direction and speed).
  • Recognize the influence and impact of robots on today’s society.

Objectives at the secondary level:

  • Describe the functions of the components of a transmission system for movement (e.g. sprockets of bikes and chain).
  • Describe speed variation or the reversibility of a transmission system for movement (e.g. gear ratio (1: 3 or 3: 1) and the effects on assembly.
  • Identify transmission systems for movement in a robot (friction wheels, pulleys and belt, gear, sprockets and chain, wheel and worm screw).
  • Explain the choice of a transmission mechanism for movement in a technical object (e.g. use of a gear instead of friction wheels for more motor torque and to prevent sliding).
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages related to adhesion and friction between parts and on the ground.
